Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in a Driven Sandpile Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
We construct a driven sandpile slope model and study it by numerical simulations in one dimension. The model is specified by a threshold slope σc, a parameter α, governing the local current-slope relation (beyond threshold), and jin, the mean input current of sand. A nonequilibrium phase diagram is obtained in the α − jin plane. We find an infinity of phases, characterized by different mean slopes and separated by continuous or first-order boundaries, some of which we obtain analytically. Extensions to two dimensions are discussed. PACS Nos: 64.60.Ht, 02.50.+s, 05.40.+j, 05.60.+w Typeset using REVTEX

Criticality in driven cellular automata with defects
We study three models of driven sandpile-type automata in the presence of quenched random defects. When the dynamics is conservative, all these models, termed the random sites (A), random bonds (B), and random slopes (C), selforganize into a critical state. For Model C the concentration-dependent exponents are nonuniversal. In the case of nonconservative defects, the asymptotic state is subcrit...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Epidemics and Sandpiles
Nonequilibrium phase transitions between an active and an absorbing state are found in models of populations, epidemics, autocatalysis, and chemical reactions on a surface. While absorbingstate phase transitions fall generically in the DP universality class, this does not preclude other universality classes, associated with a symmetry or conservation law. An interesting issue concerns the dynam...
متن کاملNonuniversal exponents in sandpiles with stochastic par - ticle number transfer
– We study fixed density sandpiles in which the number of particles transferred to a neighbor on relaxing an active site is determined stochastically by a parameter p. Using an argument, the critical density at which an active-absorbing transition occurs is found exactly. We study the critical behavior numerically and find that the exponents associated with both static and time-dependent quanti...
متن کاملUniversality class of absorbing phase transitions with a conserved field
We investigate the critical behavior of systems exhibiting a continuous absorbing phase transition in the presence of a conserved field coupled to the order parameter. The results obtained point out the existence of a new universality class of nonequilibrium phase transitions that characterizes a vast set of systems including conserved threshold transfer processes and stochastic sandpile models.
متن کاملAbsorbing states and elastic interfaces in random media: two equivalent descriptions of self-organized criticality.
We elucidate a long-standing puzzle about the nonequilibrium universality classes describing self-organized criticality in sandpile models. We show that depinning transitions of linear interfaces in random media and absorbing phase transitions (with a conserved nondiffusive field) are two equivalent languages to describe sandpile criticality. This is so despite the fact that local roughening pr...
